Getting to know Xavier Rudd

Ahead of the launch of his ninth studio album Storm Boy - available for your listening pleasure on 25th May - we shared a brief moment with Australian singer-song writer and multi-instrumentalist, Xavier Rudd, who spoke of the ingredients that make up his ideal weekend, shared how he fuels his creative tank and, being an avid traveller, he shared with us the most impactful place he's recently visited.

Describe your vibe using three words.

Dirt, fire, water.

Can you tell us a little about the inspiration behind your new album Storm Boy?

Life is my biggest influence. I have an amazing journey and so many great people around me and I’ve been through my struggles too, which makes the good times so much sweeter. It’s all there on Storm Boy.

…and what’s the most important song on the album to you?

They all have their stories, and they are all special to me, important in different ways.

What makes up your ideal weekend?

Sunshine, perfect waves, a fire and a good feed with loved ones and our mutts as the sun goes down.

What has been one of your most memorable gigs (for either positive or negative reasons)?

Playing before Neil Young in Lisbon, Portugal about 10 years ago was one. I listened to my Dad sing his albums in the car as a kid, and it was pretty special to share the stage with him.

Other than through your music, how do you fuel yourself creatively?

I find myself where I am each day. I like to focus on the simple beauty around me and I sing for what I feel and what I believe. That song leads me to be where I am meant to be, sometimes in the flames and sometimes on a hill far away observing the smoke.

What’s the last book that you couldn’t put down?

War Child by Emmanuel Jal.

What’s the last thing that made you angry?

Telstra.

What’s the last song that made your heart thump?

Amongst I by Midnite.

What’s your favourite thing about your hometown?

My family.

You’re an avid traveller. Can you tell us about a place you’ve visited that's had the biggest impact on you?

The Kimberley in far North Western Australia is one of the most powerful places I’ve been. It gets into your bones and can shape you from afar. The spirit of that country is strong and ancient and powerful.
