Ally Gavin is one quarter of Sydney based punk band, RACKETT. While they are well into their summer tour of (some of) Australia, she took the time to speak with Twenty Something Humans about their most memorable gig (it involved a shaver and a live audience), the band's vibe and the ridiculous notion that four girls in a band equals a 'girl band' - as Ally puts it, they "can shred just like the dudes do."
Rackett will be performing at The Pier Street Party on 24th February in Frankston. They will be jamming alongside Thundamentals, Art vs Science, Gyroscope, The Getaway Plan and Jesswar. Click here for more details and to buy your tickets!
Describe your ~vibe~ in three words.
Glam, punk, rock.
How did the four of you come together?
We all met in different places. Bec and I met at a party and decided that we would play in a band together. Kat and Bec played together in Bec and Ben so they knew each other from that. Astrid is Kat's partner, that's how we met her!
From left: Rhythm Guitar, Vocals - Bec Callande, Bass - Ally Gavin, Drums- Astrid Holz and Lead Guitar- Kat Ayala.
Tell us about one of your most memorable gigs.
It would definitely be the the show that we played at the Metro Theatre for Electric Lady Festival. Our lead singer, Bec, decided she was going to shave her head on stage but wasn't going to tell the rest of the band. She told us there would be a surprise but I thought she was just going to tap dance or change outfits. During our song Prey she got the shaver out and ripped into her hair. We all had to keep playing and carry on with the set while this was happening in front of us. It was wild!!
Women in the punk world (& all parts of the world for that matter) often have to work hard to carve a space for themselves and are categorised as “female punk bands” rather than just “punk bands” – what are your thoughts on this?
This really annoys me. Our main goal in this band is to just be a band! No labels - no 'female' orientation. We speak about this a lot within the band. The whole point of being equal is being treated like everyone else. I don't understand why we would still be called a 'girl band' when we can get up there and shred just like the dudes do. It's silly.

Having followed you for a while now, I can see that you’re always getting involved in fun photoshoots. Show us a photo that you think best encompasses Rackett’s ‘look’.
Well it's hard to narrow it down as it's constantly changing - for now this is our look!
Tell us a little about what it was like to make the video for ‘Prey’. Looked like a whole lot of fun!
It was an extremely long day - 12 hours to be exact. It was fun watching our idea come together and to see the 'magic' that happens behind scenes. It also showed us how much work is involved in making something like that. All the special effects and details, as well as all the production that happened afterwards. It was cool watching how the sushi fingers were made, they looked really yummy and were edible! Genius! We had the most amazing team working with us so they made it easy. The costume changes were probably the best part of the day, and getting to do fun photoshoots behind the scenes in these crazy sets.

How do you keep your creative tank full?
We try to practice every week, although it's harder when we are on tour. We usually do really long day rehearsals, so we try to practice what we have then jam out a few new ideas. Our brains run a million miles an hour, so there's a constant flow of creativity. It's about choosing the best and working with that!
What’s the last song that made your heart thump?
All I Need by Radiohead.
What’s the last thing that made you angry?
Getting up at 4am to catch a flight this morning.
What’s the best song to listen to when you’re feeling sexy?
Anything by Marvin Gaye.
Fold or scrunch?
Early morning or late night?
Neither. I'm at my best in the afternoon.
Socks and thongs: yay or nay?
That's a definite yay.
Hot cucumber or cold sausage?
Never drink a drop of alcohol again or never kiss the lips of another human again?
Never drink alcohol again.
