Getting to know Sonori

November 10, 2017

This week we speak with Jasper Russell, one quarter of the Blue Mountain based band, Sonori, an "unlikely convergence of an effects loving classically trained cellist, a post rock guru and an electronics junkie." Jasper tells us a little bit about their debut single, shares how he keeps his creative tank filled and tells us how much he loves being in bed. Spoiler, he likes it a lot.

Can you tell us a little bit about your debut single, Vanity. Where did the inspiration for the song come from?

The music was actually written first with the lyrics added by both Andre and Lulu. It’s a beautiful song but also a complex one. On the surface it deals with appearance and people’s extreme desire to undergo surgery, but it also explores emotional insecurity and hidden sadness.

What's your song writing process?

Lots of experimentation. Finding an interesting sound and a unique chord progression, basically a starting point that can be built on. The song will often build itself. Listen to it, it will tell you what it needs.

Other than through your music, how do you keep your creative tank fuelled?

I do video work so that is my other tank filler ;) I’m always visualising imagery for our music, but like music, it’s often the experimentation that leads you on the most creative paths.

What's the best thing about living in the Blue Mountains?

No traffic, clean air, beautiful scenery…. I should appreciate it more than I do!

If you could trade voices (or skills) with any musician in the world, who would it be and why?

I don’t think I would trade with anyone, I’m happy learning, discovering and making mistakes.

What advice would you offer to budding musicians?

Do it because you want to do it. Both the goal and the achievement is in the doing. If you actually make some money great! If you have to play weddings….I’m sorry I can’t help you.

Describe your favourite place in the world.

Bed. Definitely bed. It can probably be any bed. Even the display ones in stores aren’t too bad. Not a hard or firm bed though. What’s with mattress salesmen telling you a firm bed is better for you!? “Yes, lie on this hard thing! Your joy will be derived from a sense of sacrifice. You are a martyr for posture. You shall go forth and spout to everyone you meet about your firm bed and how good it is for your back!”

What's the best song to listen to when you're feeling sorry for yourself?
The Cure “Let’s go to bed”

Quick Fire Round

Favourite season:

Coffee shot or tequila shot?

Favourite guilty pleasure food:
Hamburger with Pineapple

Last movie that you watched and hated:
‘The Martian’ with Matt Damon. Ok, I didn’t actually watch all of it. I didn’t actually see much of it at all. Ok I fell asleep. Alright I was in bed.

Last song that made your heart thump:
Well it’s either our song ‘Vanity’ or ‘Bubble Butt’ by Major Lazer.

Socks and sandals, yay or nay?
I want to say “yay” just to be hipster, but I can’t do it. yyy…yyy….yyy...NAY!
