A quick catch up with Alec Benjamin

Remember the first time you broke up with someone? The tears. The baggy eyes. The junk food. The tormented diary entries. It was too much for your little heart to handle. But this wasn't enough for Alec Benjamin. Not only did he suffer through the emotional turmoil of his very first broken heart, he also wrote a song about it - a damn catchy one at that!

We had a quick catch up with Alec to find out a little more about what makes him tick.

Describe your vibe in three words.

Snap, Crackle, and Pop. LOL. Those are the first three words I thought of because of the rice crispy treat commercials. Is it cool if I use use onomatopoeia to describe myself?

Talk us through your new track ‘Let me down slowly’.

The song was inspired by my first breakup.

What’s your songwriting process?

I always like to make sure I have something to say before I begin. Often I start with a lyric or a title and then I structure the song around that.

What does an average morning look like for you?

I wake up, hit the snooze button. Wake up,snooze again then wake up and snooze one more time. Eventually, I get out of bed. That is my typical morning…

Tell us about your ‘parking lot’ shows for fans outside of Troye Sivan and Shawn Mendes concerts. What prompted you to do these?

I started performing in parking lots because I wasn’t able to get gigs anywhere else. I always wanted to open for a big artist but I never got the opportunity so I kinda just went for it!

What’s the best lesson you’ve taken from your 24 years on this earth?

You can pick your friends. You can pick your nose. But you can’t pick your friend’s nose.

What’s the best thing about your hometown of Phoenix?

We have a lot of cacti. That’s pretty cool, I guess.

Can you share some advice that’s influenced your life/career?

Borrow money from a pessimist. They won’t expect it back. Hahah. I just looked up "best advice" on Google and that’s the first thing that came up. I’ve never actually tried it but it sounds like it could work.

Who do you admire most and why?

I admire my Mom because she is incredibly strong and one of the smartest people that I know. She has always been a rock for my family. I am constantly in awe of her. :)

What’s the last thing that made you feel:

Angry: My microwave.

Inspired: Oatmeal.

Full of joy: Cotton Candy flavoured grapes

Quickie Round

The most influential book you’ve read: The dictionary.

Favourite post gig feed: I’m not sure what this means... But if you are talking about food… then it’s probably Chipotle. [Editor's note: Sorry Alec. I guess the term "having a feed" is an Aussie slang].

Guilty pleasure: Pawn Stars. I love pawn stars on the history channel.

Favourite time of the day: Morning.
