Eilish Gilligan on falling in love too quickly, her personal style and how she fills her soul back u

If you're feeling a little frazzled, fried or topsy-turvy then you should listen to the smooth, soul-filling tones of Eilish Gilligan to re-balance yourself and chill you out to your very core. Her new single, Creatures of Habit, would be a great place to start. Imagine what Sarah Blasko mixed in with a little bit of Lorde would sound like and you've got yourself Eilish.

We were luck enough to chat with this new-age, synth pop songstress this week about the ways in which she fills her soul to the brim, how her personal sense of style has adapted over time and she shares her favourite love song lyrics.

Tell us a little about the inspiration behind your new single Creature of Habit.

It’s about falling in love too fast – it feels so good and all-encompassing so you surrender, and push every niggling thought out and encourage the other person to do the same. It’s a really warm song and I thought I was writing the happiest love song I’d ever written at the time – but now I look back and see some darkness there.

…and are you a creature of habit yourself?

Absolutely – the song is also a bit of a lullaby to myself, an attempt to coax me out of my comfortable shell and ignore the voice of reason that I usually strictly obey. It’s like, hey, you have absolutely no idea where this is going and maybe you’ll get hurt but isn’t this good for now? Why not pursue what feels good?

You’re reppin’ millennial pink vibes with your new single art. How would you describe your personal style?

I used to dress ridiculously! When I went to VCA I used to wear flower crowns every day, ridiculous clashing colours, glitter all over my face and for no particular reason other than that it made me happy. I grew out of it though, I made a conscious decision when I was like, 21, to base my everyday wardrobe on black/deep dark colours. I like labels like ALPHA 60 and Kuwaii, and for gig outfits I draw a lot of inspiration from labels like Romance was Born.

What do you do to fill your soul to the brim?

Good question. I’m trying very hard to fill my soul right now. I love music – the one thing that will inevitably take me away from whatever bad state I’m in is to sit down and play or write music, and the nice thing is it doesn’t have to be good. It just has to be something. I also like to read, spend time with loved ones, run, all the normal stuff.

Are you a Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda or Samantha?

I’ll level with you – I’ve never seen Sex and the City. But I like to think I’d be a Carrie, from what I’ve heard of her she seems like the coolest one – although I doubt my or any real persons’ ability to live in a beautiful Manhattan apartment off writing one column a week.

"It’s about falling in love too fast – it feels so good and all-encompassing so you surrender, and push every niggling thought out and encourage the other person to do the same."

What’s the last movie that you watched and hated?

Again I’m going to be a bit boring and say that I don’t waste time watching things that I hate or doing things that I hate in general – my mum always finishes books even if she hates them, I don’t understand it. If I feel like I really hate something, I just turn it off, or close the book.

What’s the last song that you listened to that made your heart pound?

Chrome Halo by htmlflowers.

What are your favourite love song lyrics?

“Just before our love got lost you said I am as constant as a northern star and I said, Constantly in the darkness Where's that at? If you want me I'll be in the bar.”

If you could trade bodies with a cartoon character, who would it be and why?

Probably like, Nala from The Lion King – but I couldn’t tell you why. I don’t even really know why.

Paint us a picture of your favourite place in the world.

A warm double bed in the middle of the night with the one you love.

What are you working on now?

Lots of new music!! One more new song will come out this year, then who knows what 2018 will bring.

Quick Fire Round

Soft shell taco or hard shell taco?

A shot of coffee or a shot of tequila?

Coffee – way more productive.

Track pants on the couch or dance shoes on the dance floor?

Dance shoes for sure, if you’re looking for some healing.

Early morning or late night?

A dip in the ocean or a breath of fresh air in the mountains?

The ocean heals everything.
