Review: We Should Hang Out Sometime: embarrassingly, a true story by Josh Sundquist
I try not to speak on behalf of anyone else, but I think a lot of you will agree with me when I say that it’s easy to overthink things when it comes to love interests, crushes or Tinder dates. So let me tell you of my joy when I found a book that gave the inside scoop on Josh Sundquist’s quest for a girlfriend and his ability to overthink every possible situation that involved a female human.
After reflecting on his lack of girlfriends through high school, college and university, Josh, at 25-years-old, embarks on a quest to catch up with each girl of his (former) dream girls to find out what went wrong. To paint the perfect picture for you, Josh gives you the uncomfortable and angsty background story for each girl and a hypothesis of what could have gone wrong. Over Christmas, he catches up with every girl, hoping to gain the closure that he always needed.

This memoir could be pretty straight forward if its only substance was pure teenage drama, however it becomes even more intricate. At the age of nine, Josh lost his left leg after a long-battle with cancer. Changing between a prosthesis and crutches on a daily basis, he was determined not to let this slow him down. After being homeschooled by his faithful Christian parents, who feared he might impregnate a girl with a wink, he finally convinced them to let him attend a public high school.
“Of all the socially awkward behaviours I exhibited during my transition from homeschool to public school in ninth grade, perhaps the most outrageous was my decision to memorise everyone in the eighth-grade year book so I could greet all my classmates by name on the first day of school”.
Josh’s ability to make every situation with the opposite sex as awkward as possible will make you cringe. On the other hand, his perseverance will impress you. More than just a series of love stories, this book offers up some honest real-talk about being a teenager, with or without a disability.
Google Josh's name and you’ll see he is a Paralympic skier, a motivational speaker, has a Master’s in Communications, runs a popular YouTube channel, is an author of three books AND genuinely seems like an all round lovely guy.
If you're looking for something that is easy to read and will hit you in all the feels, look no further. Does he ever find true love? You’ll have to read it to find out.
5 out of 5 successful dates.
